We're going to make this icon: from THIS image, per request. I used Photoshop for this icon; I don't know if it's translatable to other programs.

o1. Crop your image to a square, duplicate the layer and desaturate your copy. Always make sure you have your original, full-colour image as an untouched layer at the bottom of the palatte in case you need it layer. See image.

o2. Layer -> New Adjustment Layer -> Colour Balance. Make sure you're working with 'highlights' checked, and then play with the red and yellow levels until you're happy. Your work should like a little like this.

o3. On the same colour balance layer, tick 'shadows' and play with the blue and cyan levels to suit yourself. See image.

o4. Almost done! Go to Layer -> New Adjustment Layer -> Brightness/Contrast and play with the contrast levels. Don't make them too high or your icon will look ugly! This layer is optional and sometimes, the icon looks better without it.

o5. Finally, resize your image to 100x100. Ctrl+shift+c to copy merge and paste as a new layer. Sharpen if required and add text/decoration as desired. My final image.

If you have any questions or need further clarification, just ask. As always, I'd love to see your spin on this tutorial!
